Sorry for the delay – life is too busy!  This one is dedicated to the chap at Cheltenhams Brasserie Blanc who was asking where the podcasts had gone.

The Psychonauts 2003 album “Songs For Creatures”, which was a favourite of mine back then,  has recently been re-released. Check it out. Back then they were way ahead of the crowd, though it probably doesnt sound so advanced in 2010 now everyone else has caught up.

There’s a few other blasts from the past in this podcast too, such as Speedy J, and The Outsider which featured on a Junior Boys Own compilation of 2008; As anyone who knows me from eons ago will tell you, I was mad for Boys Own back in the nineties. Couldnt get enough of Weatherall, Farley and the geezers. Has to be my all time favourite label along with Guerilla.

Had to say I thought the new Groove Armada album was pants when I first heard it, and I’m a big long time GA fan. However, now I’ve accepted that its not a house album and subsequently played it a few more times, I have to say I really like it! Check out the final track on this cast and see what you think.

Empty Love – The Psychonauts
Back Down (Cut Copy Jackmaster Remix) – Munk
The Fun Equation – Speedy J
Sex Is Extra – The Outsider
Battlehymn For Children (Tensnake Dub Remix) – The Faint
Hearts On Fire (Joakim Remix) – Cut Copy
Poison Lips – Vitalic
The Zookeepers Boy (Sasha Remix) – Mew
Paper Romance – Groove Armada

Yet more Aeroplane remixes for you! Dont hang up until you’ve heard Lisztomania and Allez Allez though……..

I’ve noticed a few darkest and deepest black country Albion fans are struggling with the continental sounding pronounciation of Roberto Di Matteo, and are resorting to calling him Robert Matthews.

Its strange how easy or hard these podcasts can be to put together. This particular one took an absolute eterntity, and still now I personally dont think its one of my better ones. Yet within minutes of finishing this one, I threw a few tracks together for the Autumn 2009 Podcast and the next one was done in an hour! It was just meant to be, unlike Albions 2008-09 season. Too many artists and not enough soldiers Tony Mowbray, to use your own words. Still, looking forward to a new season where we win plenty of games and feature at the right end of the table, and I’ve even talked Sally and Richard into season tickets!

Sub Unit One – Haujobb

Outskirts – Booka Shade

Discopolis Lifelike & Chris Menace

DJ Mehdi – Pocket Piano

Drop The Tough – Groove Armada

I’m A Rope – Tommy Sparks

Windowlicker – Aphex Twin

Dancing In The Dark – Mike Mareen

Walking On A Dream – Empire Of The Sun

Prana – Tom Middleton

Winter 2008 Podcast

Posted by bythes on Nov 29 2008 | Podcasts

My favourite tracks on this mix are the opening and closing tracks, which both feature from the excellent Balance 013 compilation. The Ladytron track is the second version of this song to appear in my podcasts, with the first version appearing back in the March 2006 mix.  Sasha was obviously inspired by that podcast when he decided to remix it again on his latest studio album Invol2ver :o )

Atlas – Marc Romboy & Stephan Bodzin

Destroy Everything You Touch (Sasha Invol2ver Remix) – Ladytron

Long Beach – Alex Dolby

Hello Piano – Inkfish & David West

Dancing In Dark Rooms (Jim Rivers Remix) – Quivver

Spaceman (Original Mix) – Way Out West

Spaceman (Robert Babicz Mix) – Way Out West

Surin (Original Mix) – Quivver

Luna (Jhonny & Peps Remix) – Stereobrains.

Autumn 2008 Podcast

Posted by bythes on Oct 01 2008 | Podcasts

This one has been ready to ship for a couple of months now. I started putting it together at the same time as doing the Summer 2008 podcast however this one seemed to just fall together very quickly and its been playing in Graeme (my Golf) for quite a while now.

I’m loving the first two tracks – the first one by Guy Gerber does a great job of warming up and introducing track two. I know bass isn’t vogue at the moment, but you know the podcast has kicked off when the bass kicks in on the second track by Michael Cassette (great name, is he a C60 or C90? Chrome II maybe?)

Last podcast I played some new material from Paul Hartnoll. This time its the turn of his brother Phil, and his new project called Long Range. This follows nicely into a track by Dusty Kid, which I first heard on Balance 13 mixed by SOS. Actually I have to say that Balance 013 is pretty damn good and SOS have done a great job of freshening up some great 80’s tracks. Who would have ever thought that something so obscure from the Ghostbusters soundtrack by the Alessi Brothers would sound so fresh and funky? Buy it. If you don’t then let me know and I’ll buy it you for Christmas.

The podcast finishes with a predictable dollop of Sasha. I know I said the new album wasnt up to much, but Mongoose is bad, I don’t mean bad as in bad, but bad as baddadas.  If you like this version, check out the Guy J remix too.

Summer 2008 Podcast

Posted by bythes on Jun 07 2008 | Podcasts

The demise of Orbital was a sad day, however I pleased to say I’ve heard some great new stuff off the Hartnolls individual projects. Paul’s first solo album titled “The Ideal Condition” has some really lovely moments, while his brothers “Long Range” project has churned out the great track “Lie Down”.

The Ideal Condition

Once again I’ve made reference to the great Alexander Coe, aka Sasha, surprisingly however its not anything from his new album “EmFire”.  His latest working isnt doing anything for me, with the exception of the remix of Mongoose. Has he failed on this one, or has he taken it to the next level and the penny will drop for me?

If you like the sound of the Simian Mobile Disco track, then have listen to the album “Attack Delay Sustain Release”. I tried to work “Sleep Deprivation” from the album into this podcast but it was just too full-on to blend in! Maybe the next podcast!

Attack Decay Sustain Release

Highlights of this podcast for me are the haunting vocals in “Dreams”, and sheer feel-good chord changes in “Starstrings”.

After a second 1-0 Wembley loss in two seasons, I was beginning to think that the Baggies were going to blow promotion and we’d all spend the summer saying how our FA Cup run was once again our ruin. Hey, not to be! The wembley loss to Portsmouth soon become a distant memory, and Albion have managed to maintian their reputation as a yo-yo club by reaching the promised land for the third time in six seasons. It’s made for an interesting debate with fellow baggies in the office regarding whether its more fun to be winning every week in the fizzy pop league, or getting whipped by the Premiership big boys? Still, a happy Baggie at the moment. Boing Boing.

Patchwork Guilt – Paul Hartnoll

Dirty – Underworld

Hotdog – Simian Mobile Disco

Killalady (Surkin Remix) - Justine Electra

All The Girls (Tomboy Mix) – Sirius Mo

Streamulation – Justice vs Simian

Dreams (M.A.N.D.Y. Remix) - DJ Monique vs The Voice

Starstrings (Instrumental) – Jody Wisternoff

Burma (Sasha Mix) – Lostep

Spring 2008 – Thy Podcast Returneth

Posted by bythes on Feb 19 2008 | Podcasts

Hey remember me?  Its been around 12 months since the last podcast, but the desire has never wained, just too much other stuff going on. To kick things off for this year, I’ve dusted off an old podcast from last year which was never actually published.

I stumbled across track 4 last year by an outfit called Ultraviolet. As soon as I saw their name a huge smile beamed across my face. I fondly remember buying a fairly obscure Ultravoilet 12″ called “Kites” from Summit Records back in 1990. 6 years later it appeared on Sasha’s first “Northern Exposure” project.

The podcast ends with a doubled up track from Fluke – another mainstay band over the years for me who have done some great albums and remixes.

In a world where music production is getting very sophisiticated, I’m not sure I have enough spare time to switch my production to Ableton Live, so for now I’m carrying on with MixMeister. It’s simple, quick and easy. Enjoy.

  • Lovebreak – Phonique
  • X-Attack – Phonique
  • Fast Freeze – My My
  • Hello San Francisco – Ultraviolet
  • Sweep – Blue Foundation
  • Lightsonic - Groove Armada
  • Chucknology vs Lets Be Young – 16 Bit Lolitas vs Quentin Harris
  • Thought Line (Original Mix) – Trafik
  • Argie Bargie – Graham & Blades
  • We Are Your Friends – Justice vs Simian
  • Philly – Fluke

Spring 2007 Podcast

Posted by bythes on Apr 19 2007 | Podcasts

Hey folks. Sorry for the delay. My podcasting has gone something like the Albion – was looking fine around Christmas and has just stuttered since. Life is busy nowadays, so I’ll probably do casts every few months or every quarter. Hey, maybe less frequency will mean higher quality?

I had podcasters block for quite a while with this one, though eventually settled on the following selection. This podcast has been influenced by the recent two Audio Therapy sampler albums – go check them out. Also, if you like this podcast then you’ll also like the Sequential compilations by Hernan Cattaneo, and Balance compilations by Jimmy Van M and James Holden.

If you enjoy the cast then don’t forget to leave a comment in my iTunes profile!

1. Beastman – Bushwacka!
2. Estrange – Dousk
3. Lion Steps – The Timewriter
4. Royal House – De Stijl & Gui Boratto
5. Wrong – Jamie McHugh
6. Its Automatic – Zoot Woman
7. Outhouse – Nathan Fake
8. Easy – Kubic & Trick feat. Valeska
9. Dirtbike – Loafer
10. Unplugged – DJ Remy
